Dora C. Howard is a comfortable, homelike place where older adults who need daytime care and assistance may receive the supportive services to remain optimally healthy and safe. A catered program with trained and caring professionals including RN's, CNA's, a Case Manager, and an Activities Coordinator permit family caregivers to attend to other responsibilities. Adult Day Health Center interventions significantly improve the quality of life for seniors and caregivers, while allowing them to remain in the community.

Onsite R.N. Dora C. Howard Centre has a Registered Nurse on site that provides:

• Assistance of new clients in their adjustment to an adult day health centre
• Development of individual's care plan to address their strengths and limitations
• Supervision of daily exercise program and oversight of planned activities
• Diabetic - blood testing, medication management, and diet monitoring
• Assistance with hygiene, toileting, meals and walking as needed
• Bladder training
• Monitor of vital signs and weights
• Established occupational therapy, speech therapy, and physical therapy plans weekly or as needed
• Interface with physical and other health care professionals as needed

C.N.A Certified Nursing Assistants for help with ambulation, hygiene, toileting, and monitoring of vital signs are always on staff. Case Management

• Follow up on an inquiries to come to our centre
• Meet with new client families for tours of facility
• Assist with determining financial eligibility for assistance
• Assist family caregiver in completing registration paperwork
• Arrange transportation as needed
• Help coordinate other services that may be needed
• Initial assessments every 6 months and reassessment
• Question and assist family caregivers with decision making
• Assist with planning for discharges
• Follow up with client after discharge and/or follow up with family during bereavement

Social Opportunities Clients are interviewed upon registration to find out what interests them and how we can enhance their stay. Adults have a chance to meet with others in similar circumstances for social activities. They enjoy organized activities designed for their age group or social needs. In addition, they have the opportunity to join in specific activities that cater to their interests.

Arranged Transportation Every effort is made to assist families in need to obtain transportation according to availability.

Caregiver Support Caregiver support group meetings are offered the last Wednesday of each month in the conference room at the Dora C. Howard Centre. Meetings are held at 1:00 p.m. Please call the centre and confirm each session (401 949-3890). Caregivers meet to share their concerns and discuss ways to resolve them.
